Hydrogen sulfide is naturally occurring in groundwater and therefore is common in well water. Usually, hydrogen sulfide emerges because of a combination in your water of both sulfate, which is a naturally occurring element found throughout the environment, and the presence of sulfate-reducing bacteria. These microorganisms produce hydrogen sulfide as a byproduct when the bacterium feeds off of the sulfate, reducing the sulfate to sulfide — which is why you may notice that your well water smells like rotten eggs.
Yes. Because iron is such a common problem with well water, this system is most often used as a well water filter. It can address rust stains and rotten egg smells, which are typical well water problems. If you are dealing with additional well water problems, you may require multiple solutions, such as additional whole house filters for arsenic, low pH or sediment; a reverse osmosis system for cleaner, safer drinking water; or a water softener to deal with hard water. With a free, in-home water consultation, your local Culligan water expert can help determine what systems your home may need.
A well water iron filter can improve the taste of your water by addressing the iron that causes metallic tastes. In addition to the taste, the Smart HE Iron-Cleer Water Filter can also address rotten-egg smells caused by hydrogen sulfide to enhance your home water experience inside and out.
This iron filter for well water was designed to use no chemicals in the aeration filtration process, keeping unfavorable substances out of the environment.
When iron concentrations exceed 0.3 mg per liter, you may start to see evidence of its presence. This can include a metallic taste; yellowing teeth; rust-like staining on dishes, clothes, sinks. tubs and toilets; and clogged plumbing. If you suspect iron in your water, schedule a free, in-home water consultation with your local Culligan water expert.
This two-tank whole house iron filter system utilizes the process of aeration and oxidation followed by filtration with a catalytic filter media. The aeration/oxidation process converts iron and hydrogen sulfide into particles that can be filtered, followed by the catalytic filter, which removes those particles from the water. An additional layer of Culligan G-50 filter media offers additional filtration for smaller particles of oxidized iron and hydrogen sulfide.
